A recent bill SB4 was approved by Texas lawmakers, and has created much controversy from Mexican Americans and many other Texas citizens. This bill follows the Trump Administration’s uptick in immigration control, making it punishable for police chiefs, sheriffs, constables, and other leaders to refuse to cooperate with federal immigration officials. This can affect many businesses in Texas that have historically relied on immigration labor. Immigrant employees working in this environment are less likely to speak up for their rights in the workplace for fear of losing their jobs. These business raids and crackdowns not only cause employees to lose jobs, they can also create an atmosphere in the workplace where employees are afraid to speak out against bad employer practices.

What Industries Could Be Affected the Most by SB4?

A recent pew report study found that the farming industry had 16 percent illegal workers, followed by construction with 12 percent, and food preparation and service with 10 percent.

Employers need to give their employees an acceptable quality of life in accordance with employment laws. Wage and overtime laws, laws regarding time off and leave, discrimination, and harassment laws all exist to protect employees from employer mistreatment.
