Retaliation is when your boss punishes you for doing something they didn't like, even if it's completely legal. Retaliation can include demotion, termination, salary reduction, or job or shift reassignment.

According to a survey conducted by the Ethics Resource Center, the following are the 12 most common workplace retaliation tactics:

  1. Left Out – 64 percent of surveyed workers said they were excluded from decisions by supervisors or management
  2. Cold Shoulder – 62 percent said they given the cold shoulder by their co-workers
  3. Managerial Abuse – 62 percent report they were verbally abused by a supervisor
  4. Potential Job Loss – 56 percent said they almost lost their jobs
  5. No Promotion – 55 percent said they were passed over for a promotion or raise
  6. Abuse By Coworkers – 51 percent experienced verbal abuse by other employees
  7. Pay Cut – 46 percent said their hours and/or pay were cut
  8. Transferred – 44 percent said they were reassigned or relocated
  9. Downgrade – 32 percent said they were demoted
  10. Online Abuse – 31 percent report experiencing online harassment
  11. Physical Harm – 31 percent report physical harm to themselves or their property
  12. Home Harassment – 29 percent report they were harassed at home
