Gender discrimination comes in many forms. Whether it’s a pay gap, not promoting women, or refusing to hire men, gender discrimination can be extremely damaging. Both men and women benefit immensely from gender equality at work, but universal equality in the workplace has not yet been achieved.
How to Reach Gender Equality
In order to get there, we have to do more than just punish acts of sex discrimination as they come up; there needs to be more done to promote gender equality at work. There are a number of ways to do that, including:- Get Familiar with Anti-Discrimination Laws – Knowing is half the battle. By familiarizing yourself with workplace discrimination laws, you will be better equipped to recognize and prevent gender discrimination.
- Lead by Example – Setting a good example for coworkers and children is one of the best ways to influence the future of gender equality.
- Equality Training – If your business doesn’t already, ask your employer to provide training seminars focused on workplace discrimination and gender equality.
- Advocate for Equal Pay – If there is a gender pay gap where you work, be an advocate for change. Remind your employer that there is a law against pay disparity: the Equal Pay Act of 1963.
- Praising Coworkers – Make sure to always give credit where credit is due. By praising any and all coworkers on a job well done, you show that people should be judged on merit rather than gender.
- Encourage Promotions – If there are significantly more men in managerial position where you work, encourage female coworkers to apply for open management positions to promote equality.
