Sex and Age Discrimination in Hollywood

The life of a celebrity actress may seem to be devoid of any serious issues, but it turns out that’s not the case. Just like in any other industry, Hollywood suffers from sex and age discrimination.

Sexism and ageism are strong on the silver screen. Actresses that once enjoyed illustrious careers filled with desirable roles in their teens and 20s have found the well to run a little drier the older they get.

Liv Tyler recently said in a More magazine interview that “It’s not fun when you see things start to change. When you’re in your teens or 20s there is an abundance of ingénue parts which fare exciting to play. But at [my age], you’re usually the wife or the girlfriend, a sort of second-class citizen. There are more interesting roles for women when they get a bit older.”

Tyler is not alone in stating her dissatisfaction with the way women are treated as they age. Helen Mirren, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Patricia Arquette, and many more have also slammed the industry for the ongoing discrimination.

“To every woman who gave birth, to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody else’s equal rights. It’s our time to have wage equality once and for all and equal rights for women in the United States of America” Patricia Arquette famously said in her 2015 Best Supporting Actress speech.

Every industry, even the seemingly super glamorous Hollywood industry, desperately needs an overhaul. We have to do something to change the ongoing sexism and ageism that continues to eat at the heart of our country.
